Shaykh Beyazid al-Bistāmi once narrated: "One day I reached the banks of the Tigris River and wanted to cross it. At that moment, the two banks of the river came together, allowing me to pass. But I paid no attention to this and said: 'I will not be deceived by this. I cannot waste a lifetime's worth of effort and spiritual capital for something people cross for half a dirham. I seek not karāmāt (Non‑prophetic miracles), but the Karīm (the Most Generous), my Rabb.'"
